What to check when your website is unreachable

Narrow down the issue with a few checks that do not change your website or server.

Capture the exact problem

Note the full URL and exact error. A DNS error, certificate warning, timeout, and HTTP error can have different causes.

Try a second connection

  1. Try the website on another device or network, such as mobile data.
  2. Check whether one page or the entire website is affected.
  3. Note any recent domain, DNS, certificate, plugin, or server changes.

Open a hosting ticket

Include the URL, the time it began, affected users, and a screenshot of the error. Describe the business impact so we can assess the issue.

Avoid repeated restarts or DNS changes while diagnosing an outage. They can hide the original problem.
